Porthgwidden Beach Café overlooks the stunning Porthgwidden Beach. It is open all year round for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. Whatever time of day you choose to join us, and whatever the weather, you are guaranteed spectacular views of St Ives Bay overlooked by Godrevy Lighthouse standing sentinel and imposing. This all leads to a perfect atmosphere to enjoy our signature dishes, such as our fragrant mussels, crispy squid, and varieties of fish curries; all enhanced by our fully licensed bar.
Our recently built terrace covering means that we now have many more tables from which to enjoy our special views. This area is also suitable for any customers who wish to be accompanied by their dog whilst they eat and drink.
Tucked between the grassy slopes of ‘The Island’ and the town’s picturesque harbour, Porthgwidden Beach is one of St Ives’ best kept secrets. Slip around cobbled corners, meander down twisting lanes and eventually you’ll find the small and sheltered bay, home to a café beloved of summer visitors and locals alike.
Relax and enjoy the view from this vantage point overlooking the golden sands and sparkling sea. If you’re lucky you might just spot a pod of dolphins passing by. In the winter shelter from the elements can be found inside and on the new, fully enclosed glass terrace which remains heated and cosy in all weathers. In the summer the sun soaked deck has a Mediterranean feel as guests bask in the sea air, and the sounds of the Cornish coast drift up from the beach below.
The food is varied, vibrant and inspired by coastal cuisine from around the world. Seafood features prominently and in all guises. For example, choose from the classic British Fish and Chips, a punchy Panang Thai Curry, a comforting Smoked Haddock Chowder, or the zesty Asian-style Dressed Crab.
The kitchen team lavish thought and care when creating vegetarian and vegan options, taking their pick from the bounty of fresh local produce Cornwall is famous for. A children’s menu is also available and the café can cater for most special requirements; talk to the team beforehand or when placing your order if you have any questions.
Ethos & Sustainability
We have stripped out much of what is unnecessary; dairy and gluten take a back seat in favour of fresh and exciting textures and flavours. You will be greeted by our friendly waiting staff and offered a choice of indoor or outdoor seating. The latest addition of our state-of-the-art heated terrace means you can enjoy the beauty of alfresco dining without the risk of getting wet, the perfect place to watch those winter storms.
The café recycles as much as possible to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill sites. There are recycling bins available across the beach to encourage visitors not only to keep our beaches clean but also to help the environment by recycling as well.
We use local suppliers where possible to help the environment by reducing the products’ journey thus cutting down on transportation and gas emissions. One of our biggest suppliers is Matthew Stevens & Son who catch fish using a minimal stress regime. Much of their fish comes from the South West such as St Ives, Newlyn, Looe and Mevagissey. Shellfish are in some cases live and stress-free.
We are currently one of the top restaurants in the country and have been awarded one of the highest ratings from fish2fork for our sustainable fish policy.
