Park & Ride:
St Ives in the summer months can be a nightmare for traffic and parking. We recommend you leave your car at the park and ride in Lelant, take a ten minute, scenic, old-fashioned train ride on this beautiful stretch of coastline to St Ives, then a 15-minute stroll through the picturesque town past the harbour and through to Porthgwidden.
Take the M5 towards Exeter or Plymouth (take the A38 from Plymouth) join the A30 into Cornwall. Follow the A30 all the way to the St Erth roundabout where you take the 2nd exit to St Ives. The next choice you need to make is the coach road (the holiday route) or the main road through Lelant and Carbis Bay – it’s 6 of one and half a dozen of the other – they do bring you into different ends of the town but either way you will be able to follow the signs for parking and walk to Porthgwidden.
Paddington London (First Great Western) to Penzance, Glasgow (Virgin) to Penzance, change at St Erth for St Ives – then the most beautiful train ride you will ever take pops you out just above Porthminster. From there is it a 15min walk through St Ives, round the harbour and towards the chapel on the island (you can see it from the station). Porthgwidden is nestled on the lefthand side of the island.
To Newquay, Taxi from Newquay, Call Ace Cars on 01736 797799
From St Ives Harbour Front, head away from the lifeboat house (clockwise around the harbour with the sea/beach on your left). You can either walk up Fish Street (left turn at the Sloop Inn), right at the end, then first left down Island Rd. The beach is at the end of Island Rd on your right. Or you can take the more picturesque route by following the Wharf round until you see the sea in front of you. Turn left and follow the coast path round and you will get to Porthgwidden – honestly, you can’t miss it!
Porthgwidden does have a long stay carpark just next to it called the Island Car Park. As you can imagine it is very busy in the summer but if you get there early (before 9am) you should get a spot. TR26 1SY, to Burrow Road should get you there.
